Diamond Reports

Overview

Most quality diamonds sold today come with a diamond certificate, also known as a diamond grading report. This is a professional evaluation of a diamond’s quality and its unique characteristics. This “cert,” as it is often called in the diamond and jewelry industry, provides invaluable information that serves as a “blueprint” of your diamond and provides proof of its identity. The most accurate and widely respected diamond grading reports are issued by independent accredited gem laboratories that were not involved in the purchase or sale of the diamond.

What’s in a Grading Report?
While diamond grading reports may vary somewhat from lab to lab, the key elements you’ll find in a standard report include:
• A plotted diagram of the stone, listing all of its significant characteristics.
• The shape and style of cut.
• Carat weight, color grade and clarity grade.
• Your diamond’s exact measurements and proportions.
• All of your diamond’s external and internal imperfections.
• The quality of your diamond’s finish, polish and symmetry.

The price value of a diamond is not included in a grading report. These reports only reflect the quality of a diamond and are meant to be valid long after market prices have changed. If you want a paper to certify your diamond’s value at the time of purchase for insurance purposes, you’ll need to get an appraisal.

Why Do You Need One?
A grading report is a tangible document that attests to the quality and authenticity of your stone. It allows you to “comparison shop” to determine which diamond is a better value for you, based on its quality and unique characteristics. In addition, it is used by appraisers to help gauge a stone’s replacement value for insurance purposes should it be lost, stolen or damaged.
